Case Study #2: Developing a Contractor Expectations Manual

November 28, 2024

The Client: A major oil and gas producer based in Calgary, Alberta.

Project Overview: The client wanted a contractor expectations manual to clearly outline their health and safety standards to contractors and prevent inconsistencies in contractor performance and communication gaps.

Approach:

  • Reviewed sample documents provided by the client and attended a client-hosted contractor expectation manual working session which involved participation from key field personnel.
  • Drafted the manual incorporating the client’s health, safety, and environmental standards and addressing specific concerns brought forward in the working session.
  • Conducted final edits within the client’s office to present the document to senior management for review.

Before: The client did not have a tool to consistently communicate their HSE expectations to front-line contractors.

After: The manual identified the client’s specific HSE standards and the requirement for contractors to communicate these expectations to their front-line workers and subcontractors.

Outcome: The new Contractor Expectations Manual was implemented throughout the company and provided to contractors thereby improving adherence to the client’s HSE standards and communication of the standards to front-line workers.
